School Board approves changes to calendar
The regular monthly meeting of the Dixon School Board was opened with the Missouri School Board Association (MSBA) Monthly Report on video which included an interview with Governor Jay Nixon. Gov. Nixon’s remarks included an $18M increase in K-12 education for this year, Career Ladder was fully funded for teachers that willingly take on additional responsibilities, and the A+ program and how he wished it was a statewide program. He reported that the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has applied for a Government grant for the Race to the Top program. He said that Missouri is in a good position for this grant due to test results, etc. When asked about Open Enrollment – a provision that would allow students to attend any school, he replied that although some rural areas are not able to offer courses that larger city areas are able to offer, the provision would cause more problems than it solves as schools would not know how many students to plan for and with a decrease in enrollment in some districts, funding would be reduced. Overall, Nixon said he was proud of Missouri’s academic achievements.
