How To Change Your Car’s Oil At Home for the First Time

Changing your car’s oil might seem intimidating, but it’s actually one of the most straightforward maintenance tasks you can perform. With the right tools and a little patience, you can save money and gain confidence in maintaining your vehicle. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about how to change your car’s oil at home for the first time.
Gather Your Essential Tools and Materials
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary equipment. You’ll need a socket wrench set, an oil drain pan, a funnel, disposable gloves, and safety glasses. Additionally, purchase the correct amount and type of motor oil for your vehicle, along with a new filter.
Prepare Your Vehicle Safely
If possible, drive your vehicle for a few minutes before starting to warm the oil slightly, as warm oil drains more completely compared to cold oil. However, avoid working with extremely hot oil that could cause burns. Turn off the engine and wait about 10 to 15 minutes to let it cool to a safe temperature.
Locate and Access the Drain Plug
Raise the front of your vehicle using car ramps or jack stands. Once you have safe access underneath, locate the oil drain plug on the pan. Position your drain pan slightly off-center in the direction the oil will flow when you remove the plug.
Drain the Old Oil
Using the appropriate socket, carefully loosen the drain plug. Allow the oil to drain completely, which usually takes 10 – 15 minutes.
Replace the Oil Filter
Use an oil filter wrench to remove the filter. Some oil will spill out, so keep your drain pan handy. Before installing the new filter, apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket. Install the new one by hand until the gasket makes contact with the mounting surface, then tighten an additional three-quarters turn.
Refill With Fresh Oil
After the old oil finishes draining and there’s a new filter, reinstall the drain plug with a new gasket, if provided. Tighten it snugly but don’t overtighten it, as this can damage the oil pan threads. Lower your vehicle and remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Using a funnel, slowly pour in the new oil, adding about three-quarters of the recommended amount initially.
Check and Test Your Work
Replace the oil filler cap and start the engine. Let it run for a few minutes, then turn it off and wait about five minutes for the oil to settle. Check the oil level and add more if needed to reach the full mark. Look under the car to make sure there are no leaks from the drain plug or filter.
Congratulations on changing your car’s oil at home for the first time! With practice, this entire process will become routine, saving you money and giving you greater control over your vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
