A Guide to the Trailers You’ll Tow as a Truck Driver

As a semi-truck driver, you’ll tow a wide range of trailers during your time on the job. Different trailers have different towing considerations, so it’s helpful to know some of the most common types. This guide to the trailers you’ll tow as a truck driver will help you prepare for anything the job throws your way.

Dry Van Trailers

Dry van trailers are probably what you picture first when you think of semi-trailers. They’re enclosed boxes on wheels used to haul dry goods like non-perishable food, clothes, and electronics. Because they’re fully enclosed, they protect cargo from bad weather and theft. They’re one of the most common trailers you’ll encounter.

Flatbed Trailers

Next, we have flatbed trailers. These are completely open platforms. Their design allows for carrying items that wouldn’t fit in an enclosed trailer, such as large building components or heavy machinery. You’ll need to know how to properly secure your loads with straps, chains, and tarps to keep everything safe during transit.

Refrigerated Trailers

Refrigerated trailers, or “reefers,” look like dry vans, but they have a refrigeration unit on the front. They carry perishable goods like produce, meat, and dairy products that need to stay at a specific temperature. You’ll be responsible for monitoring the temperature to keep the cargo fresh.

Dump Trailers

You’ll also come across dump trailers, which transport loose materials like sand, gravel, or dirt. They have a hydraulic lift that tilts the trailer to dump the contents. You’ll find there are both framed and frameless dump trailers, each with its own method for unloading.

Tanker Trailers

Tanker trailers transport liquids and gases, such as gasoline, milk, or chemicals. These trailers require special handling and certifications because the contents can be hazardous. Safety is a top priority when you’re pulling a tanker.

Master the Trailers You’ll Tow as a Truck Driver

Knowing the different trailers you’ll tow as a truck driver makes your job more predictable, and it also becomes easier and safer. When you can anticipate what each trailer needs, you’re better equipped to handle the demands of the road.
