Whether you’re going to college or need a new mattress to support your body, it’s vital to know what kind to get. Here are three different types of mattresses to know before purchasing one. Whether it’s foam, innerspring, or bed-in-a-box, each mattress type has pros and cons to consider. Think about how you sleep and your personal taste to decide what to get.
Foam mattresses reign as some of the most widespread mattresses today. People also call them memory foam mattresses. They’re comfortable, conform to the body, and are soft. Rather than compress under body pressure, the polyurethane memory foam conforms under body heat and pressure but retains its overall shape when you aren’t lying on it. While soft, they also come in firm or extra firm variations for those who want them. Still, one of the main drawbacks to memory foam mattresses is that they’re too soft for some people. They also absorb body heat. So, unless you have cooling memory foam, they may get too hot for you to feel comfortable.
Innerspring mattresses are another common type. Traditionally, these mattresses use metal springs or coils to support body weight. They’re typically the most affordable type of mattress and are suitable for any budget as a result. Innerspring mattresses also represent the most versatile type due to the wide range of firmness and comfort options available. However, they aren’t the most comfortable options for side sleepers or sensitive sleepers. Innerspring mattresses don’t conform to body pressure, so they can also cause back issues if improperly designed.
The last type of mattress to know is the bed-in-a-box mattress. These are mattresses that come pre-rolled in boxes, ready for use. Once you bring one home, you simply unbox the mattress, lay it on the bedframe, and give it time to open. There are many benefits of bed-in-a-box mattresses. Mainly, they save on cost and setup. Whereas you need to lift and maneuver traditional mattresses onto the bed, these mattresses come shipped inside their respective boxes, ready for use. They’re more affordable than many other mattresses but equally durable and comfortable. Keep in mind that bed-in-a-box mattresses need to air out once opened, as they often come with a strong chemical odor. The reason for this is that they must undergo some treatment to remain preserved during shipping.
